How a journalism professor got his class to put AI to the test and think like an AI model in the process

We’re excited to spotlight Prof. John Wihbey, our AI Media Strategies Lab director, whose graduate-level course AI and Media Industries was recently featured in Northeastern Global News.

In this forward-thinking class, students don’t just use AI tools - they think like AI models. Through hands-on experimentation with systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and real-world collaborations with nonprofits via Northeastern’s Service Learning program, students explore how generative AI can be practically and ethically integrated into journalism, public relations, and media strategy.

The course emphasizes critical thinking, ethical awareness, and responsible innovation - values that align with our lab’s mission. As Prof.John Wihbey puts it, the goal is to move beyond hype and ask the hard questions: Where is the line between human and machine creativity? What are AI's true capabilities - and its limits?
